Canfield official says lawsuit allegations are "without merit" by former superintendent

The former superintendent of the Canfield Local School District filed a lawsuit against the city's police department and chief for defamation.
Former superintendent Alex Geordan is accusing Chief Charles Colucci and the department of defaming him, according to the lawsuit announced by the Engler Law Firm Thursday, July 2.
"Former superintendent Geordan accused Colucci and the department of defaming him with statements relating to what Colucci has publicly stated were lies and untruths told by Geordan," the lawsuit stated.
Geordan alleges that the purpose of the defamation was to force him out as superintendent. The lawsuit goes on to accuse Colucci of engaging in an effort to reduce the role of school officials in school-related disciplinary matters. It alleges Colucci's intent is to give the Canfield Police Department the primary power and authority in handling school disciplinary issues.
Geordan's attorney alleges that Colucci, with the department's approval, mounted an attack on Geordan's job because Geordan resisted Colucci's alleged efforts to infringe upon school authority.
On Tuesday, July 7, the Canfield City Manager Wade Calhoun sent out a media release that stated the city had "reviewed the complaint filed on behalf of Alex Geordan against the Canfield Police Department and Police Chief Charles Colucci. The city will vigorously defend this case and is confident that the allegations contained in the complaint are without merit."
Back in December, Geordan resigned as the school's superintendent after he came under scrutiny over what police characterized as a history of failing to report serious threats to law enforcement.
