Cedar Point opens for 2020 season Thursday

Cedar Point opens for the season Thursday, July 9, with many safety precautions in place for park guests.
Guests must wear a mask at all times, even during a rides. The only time guests can take their mask off is at designated social distancing areas.
All guests are screened before they enter the park. There are also social distancing markers at the entrance, through the park and in lines to keep visitors safe.
On most rides, certain seats are roped off to promote social distancing on the ride.
"We're closing off every other row to maintain social distancing," said Director of Communications for Cedar Point, Tony Clark. "Some of the rides, like Gatekeeper, are so spread out that they don't need to rope off every other row."
Once the ride is complete, an employee thoroughly cleans the seat for a new rider to come on the ride.
"We're sanitizing every few [ride] cycles," Clark said. "We're cleaning the restraint, the seats, we're making sure that the ride experience is still good."
Social distancing in ride lines is strictly enforced with more markers in every ride line.
"Even opening late in the season, even having to reduce our capacity, we felt like it was our responsibility to try and bring some happiness to our society," said General Manager for Cedar Point, Jason McClure.
Restaurants and gift shops also have contactless pay options for guests.
With a reduced number of people in the park per day, visitors must make a reservation online in advance to get tickets.
"The safety protocols that are in place make it different," McClure said, "but we think it's important that we open up and welcome guests that want to come."
The Cedar Point app offers a health questionnaire for any questions or concerns visitors may have. The app also includes information on rides that are open and closed.
Anyone who has a season pass for the 2020 season has a renewal into the 2021 season. McClure told 21 News if a "second wave" of COVID-19 strikes, park officials plan to follow Governor Mike DeWine's safety plans.
