A Beloit man trying to round up a runaway cow was run over by a truck and later died from his injuries.

On Tuesday, July 21st, Douglas Dye of Beloit was transporting his cow to the Damascus Livestock Auction on Valley Road in Damascus.  As Dye was unloading the cow for auction, the cow ran into a nearby hay field.

Konrad VanPelt, of Columbiana, works at Damascus Livestock Auction and was assisting Dye in trying to track the cow down.

VanPelt was driving a truck into the hay field trying to herd the cow and keep it from going into the road.

VanPelt told the Columbiana County Sheriff deputies that as the cow ran in the opposite direction, he put the truck into reverse to try and keep it off the road.   As he bumped the cow with the truck, VanPelt also heard the screams of Dye.  At this point, he stopped and got out of the truck only to find Dye screaming and panicked.

As emergency personnel arrived on the scene and attended to an injured Dye, he became unresponsive and was transported to Salem Hospital where he later died.

The sheriff department is looking at this as an accident and no charges are expected to be filed.
