Lawrence Co. food drive helps families as unemployment extension deadline looms

"This isn't just people coming to get extra stuff, they're here to get necessities," says Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
And in a time like this, even someone as blessed as him realizes those necessities aren't bare - they're precious.
Jubilee Ministries, the Christian Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania, and 'Big Ben' himself helped 1,500 families Wednesday during a drive-thru food drive.
"This is wonderful, I came here for the first time two weeks ago and it really helps out," says Sue Smith. She's been laid off since March. This time, there's a little more at stake. Congress is under pressure to extend an extra $600 in unemployment benefits beyond this week.
"Even if it's not the full amount, even just a little bit, they've got to do something," Smith said. "I can't afford to live on $124 a week."
Many folks can't, and even families who aren't getting those benefits themselves are getting worried.
"My daughter and son-in-law, it's probably going to be drastic for them because he just got word he might not have a job to go back to, so that $600 would really help them get over this," said JoAnn Mellott.
Michelle Heemer shares that concern for a relative who got laid off from a local restaurant.
"They're now at 25 percent capacity, when we hit 50 percent we were hopeful that she might get her job back but she's probably not going to," Heemer said.
But while the concern is real, so is the gratitude.
With $75,000 worth of food given out in just a couple hours - the volunteers came away with time and money well spent.
