Warren income tax renewal levy placed on November ballot

An ordinance to place Warren's half-percent income tax renewal levy on the November ballot passed unanimously.
Tonight was the third and final reading for the levy.
The levy is specifically earmarked for police, fire, and roads.
City leaders said the current levy doesn't expire until December 2021 but, city officials wanted to place it on the ballot this November so that in case it were to fail they would have another chance to place it before voters next year.
City leaders have said previously that those departments may have had to cut funding if the renewal was not passed.
The renewal of the half-percent income tax, like last time, would be temporary and only for the next five years.
The city's Law Director Enzo Cantalamessa said that shows accountability to the citizens, although he believes permanent levy is something to consider in the future since the unpredictability of funding has turned the city into a 'training ground' for some police and firefighters.
