Columbiana Co. reporting 82 new cases of COVID this week

The Columbiana County Health District is reporting 82 new cases of COVID-19 since last Friday. There are 1,716 positive cases within the county, including 956 inmates at the Federal Correctional Institution in Elkton. The county also has 131 area residents in long care facilities with the virus and 629 cases of community spread. Of the new cases being reported, 75 are from community spread.
There were no new virus-related deaths in the county according the the health district, the state's dashboard for county information is indicating one death on Aug. 13.
The county was designated as level 2 (orange) on Thursday, because of the county met two of the seven indicators, new cases per capita and non-congregate cases. New cases per capita is flagged if there are more than 50 cases per 100,000 residents over the last two weeks. Non-congregate cases is flagged when the proportion of cases that are not in a congregate setting is over 50 percent.
When 21 News reached out to Columbiana County Health District Public Information Officer Laura Fauss about level 2 designation, Fauss stated that the department has found a connection between congregate cases and non-congregate positive cases through employees and their close contacts, such as health care workers.
