One-hundred Westminster students asked to quarantine

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Less than two weeks after resuming classes, Westminster College has announced that about 100 students have been asked to quarantine for the next three weeks because of potential exposure to COVID-19.
A statement from the college says the quarantine request was issued “out of an abundance of caution” in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
There have been three confirmed cases of COVID-19 since July 25. The results of other tests are still pending. Contact tracing will be implemented for any confirmed cases, according to the college.
The possible exposure was detected from daily self-checks and consultation with the campus Wellness Center.
Westminster administrators say the quarantine should not be interpreted as an outbreak on campus but as an effort to prevent an outbreak.
The quarantined students will return to normal campus activities on September 11 unless they develop symptoms that would warrant testing, according to the statement.
Administrators say that they are working with the quarantined students to make housing, meal, and academic arrangements.
Students have been asked to contact their faculty members about their quarantine status.
Campus activities began on Friday, August 14, as 310 incoming students were welcomed with two opening convocation ceremonies at Burry Stadium, which according to a media release, were “physically-distanced.”
Academic classes for all students began Monday, August 17.
