The Good Humor bar is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The inventor Harry Burt was born in Trumbull county and moved to Youngstown in 1893 to open a candy store according to The Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

The shop mainly produced penny candies and his main customers were the children who attended Frot Treet Elementary School which the school was located 1 block south of the shop.

Over time Burt would add delicious sweets to his menu and his shop was the first to develop "old fashioned chocolate cream drops"

According to the website It's wasn't until 1920 that Burt developed a smooth chocolate coating that would work well with his ice cream, however, it was a very messy treat. The idea was to put a stick in the ice cream and freeze it, then dip the frozen ice cream into the chocolate. This stuck and it gained national attention.

The article states that Burt called this idea "a new clean convenient way to eat ice cream" and the name Good Humor was born. The thought process of the name alluded to the idea that a person's humor was related to a person's sense of taste.

Earlier this morning on WFMJ Today we spoke with Traci Manning with The Mahooning Valley Historical Society and she quoted that "Harry Burt invented food delivery and he was the first person to deliver food". So in summary we all need to thank Mr. Burt especially with these unprecedented times.

Burt ended up passing away in 1926 but his legacy lives on with thousands enjoying his ice cream still today.

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is celebrating Burt and the Good Humor Bar by doing a celebration video and you can check it out on their YouTube page.
