A former Liberty Township firefighter and his wife remained in the Trumbull County Jail Friday following their arrests on drug-related charges.

Josh Cleland was arrested Thursday on charges, including a weapons violation charge, possession of methamphetamines, tampering with evidence, dangerous drugs, and possession of steroids.

The investigation into alleged drug use and drug trading inside the fire department began in April following the drug overdose death of firefighter John Beard April 12. Cleland resigned from the department.

The Task Force states Cleland's wife, Hayleh Omar, is facing charges of complicity and permitting drug abuse.

Liberty township officials confirm that Captain Kathy Macchihone, the second in command at the fire department, is on administrative leave as the department is rocked by an investigation of drug use.

Bond for Cleland is $25,000. Omar is being held on $15,000 pending arraignment in Girard Municipal Court.
