Pennsylvania lawmakers gathered in Harriburg Wednesday for a Press conference calling on Gov. Tom Wolf to sign House Bill 2787. The bill would ensure decisions about school sports and spectators would be made at the local level.

Some House republicans and democrats say Gov. Wolf's decision to allow local schools to make their own decisions for fall classes but not to regulate spectators at sporting events and other activities is inconsistent at best. They are introducing a bill that would allows schools to make those calls.

"Who best knows how to do this than local schools boards because they know the capacities of their stadiums and their gymnasiums and auditoriums. They best how how many can attend safely," said Rep. Bill Kortz, 38th Dist (D).

Right now outdoor events are limited to 250 people and indoor only 25.

The superintendent at Mercer schools, Dr. Ronald Rowe, says that's not good for students who need that support from family members.

"Currently with the restriction of only 25 allowed at a gathering that allows for only the teams, coaches and the officials to be present in our gymnasiums. We have gymnasiums that can hold over 1000 people and zero spectators," said Rowe.

The superintendent says this is an important time for a student's development in school and in sports and their families should be able to share in that experience.

Meanwhile, in Harrisburg, Gov. Wolf stated days ago that he would veto any such legislation. Lawmakers say they believe they have enough votes to override that veto if necessary.
