Mahoning Valley - Board of elections officials of the Mahoning Valley said over 2,100 voters cast their ballots on the first day of early in-person voting in Ohio. In 2016, officials said roughly 1,100 people voted early on the first day.

2020 & 2016 early voter turnout:

Mahoning: 800

2016: 500

Trumbull: 1,040

2016: 554

Columbiana: 313

2016: 113

Mahoning County Elections Director Joyce Kale-Pesta said she saw a mixed demographic of young and elder voters.

"This is like the day before an election on the weekend," Kale-Pesta said, "We've never had this before on the first day of voting so we're very excited."

Dr. David Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Akron, said he predicts there will be more early voting in the 2020 election than any election in history and urges people to take advantage of the opportunity.

"There's very few people, a small percentage of people who don't know who they're going to vote for, it's certainly less than 10 percent," Cohen said, "If you've already made up your mind, there's really no reason to wait until November 3rd and stand in a long line with people."
