A 55-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday evening after crashing his SUV into a Shenango Township Church.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 3439 Ellwood Road.

There was severe damage to the sanctuary including damage to the church's organ.

Shenango Township Fire officials say the man was traveling south on Route 65 when the SUV left the roadway and traveled over 800 feet through a grassy area and into the church.

The car was halfway into the building when officials got to the scene and the driver was able to get himself out of the car.

The suspect was handcuffed and taken to UPMC Jameson in New Castle for drug and alcohol testing to determine if a license suspension could be possible.

The church had just recently restarted in-house services due to COVID-19.
