Vindicator file photo/ October 20, 1980 | Forty years ago, in the waning days of the campaign between President Jimmy Carter and Republican challenger  Ronald Reagan,  the president came to the Mahoning  Valley. Among the events was an hour-long town hall at the downtown Youngstown studio of WFMJ-TV.  President Carter greeted members of the audience of 40, who had been selected by lot.

1995: Warren police charge two 17-year-old boys with aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping in the death of Mark Heltzel, 34, whose body was found in the road at Pine Avenue and South Street.  Prosecutor Dennis Watkins says he will seek to have them tried as adults. 
 
The Austintown Board of Zoning Appeals says the Truckers Club at Interstate 80 and state Route 46 can continue to offer truckers laundry service, showers and a lounge, but cannot provide massages, which are considered a sexually oriented business under township zoning. 
 
Jack W. Hynes, 88, manager of the Paramount, Park, State and Palace theaters during the Depression and manager of Powers Auditorium and the Youngstown Symphony for 19 years, dies of heart failure in the Greenbrier Nursing Home. He brought the Barrymores,  Lunt and Fontanne  and George M. Cohan to Youngstown and was known for his charitable work. 
 
1980: President Jimmy Carter is welcomed to Beaver Valley, Pa., by marching bands, the Democratic Party faithful and cheering crowds numbering 10,000. After speaking at the Carnegie Library in Beaver Falls, he left for Youngstown. 
 
During an hour-long town hall at WFMJ-TV, President Carter proposes allowing Ohio utilities to use Ohio coal and to promote the use of Ohio coal throughout the United States.
 
A Republican "truth squad" headed by Pennsylvania Gov. Richard Thornburgh and U.S. Sen. John G. Tower, R-Texas, arrives in Youngstown to counter the appearance of President Carter.   
 
1970: The Youngstown Board of Education names Robert L. Pegues Jr.  as its first black assistant superintendent.
 
William L. Clark, 29, of Columbiana and Camillio P. Constantino, 33, of Warren are killed instantly and four other people are injured when their cars collided in state Route 46 just south of Route 165 in Beaver Township. 
 
Singer Sergio Franchi makes his first appearance in Youngstown, headlining a variety show for the Monday Musical Club. 
 
1945: Mahoning County Sheriff Ralph Elser says pre-Halloween pranksters caused hundreds of dollars in damage, prompting a crackdown that brought 40 teenage arrests in rural areas.
 
Ursuline defeats South 13-0 to take the lead in the City Series. The game was interrupted for two hours by a power outage and many of the 15,000 fans had left by the time play resumed. 
 
Ohio's first lady, Mrs. Frank Lausche, is pictured with dozens of chickens that she raises on the mansion grounds in Columbus.
