New Middletown pharmacist helps employees 'go green'

If you truly believe in a cause, do you talk the talk and walk the walk?
One man's quest to help save the environment has led him to try and help his employees do the same.
Rick Carano owns Village Pharmacy in New Middletown and two other valley pharmacies. He believes good health means we need clean air. That's why he covered his roof in solar panels in 2009.
It's also why he started driving hybrid and electric cars in 2002. He believes in the cause so much he encourages all of his employees to go green. And he does it by providing some of his own green.
"I recognized if I really wanted to make a change I needed to have other people follow me, so I invited all my employees to buy an electric or hybrid car, and I give them a $2000 per vehicle incentive," said Carano.
So far, He's helped employees buy a total of 108 electric cars.
"They don't go to the gas station anymore. They plug into solar panels. They drive from the sun. That right there puts a song in my heart," added Carano.
Pharmacist Mark Johnson is on his third hybrid, thanks to his boss.
"It's good for the environment. It's good for my pocketbook! The car functions great! My son has an all-electric plug-in, and my daughter does as well," said Johnson.
Carano says he's just doing his part and hopes his generosity spreads to others to make this world a better place to live and breathe.
