YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The founder of a well-known  fireworks company is honoring family history while investing in the Valley's future with a $1 million donation to Youngstown State University.

Bruce Zoldan, Phantom Fireworks president and CEO, along with his family made the donation to the university's "We See Tomorrow" campaign.

The campaign is a $ 125 million fundraising effort by the YSU Foundation.

The Zoldan family donation was made in honor of Sam and Sylvia Zoldan, Bruce's parents, along with his uncle, Abe Yampolsky.

A portion of the money will go towards the Sam and Sylvia Zoldan scholarship fund, which was established in 2006, which is available to business students who take at least one class in Judaic and Holocaust Studies.

In addition to the scholarships, the donation will also go towards the newly-created Zoldan-Yampolsky Family Executive Fellows Program, which operates through the Williamson College of Business Administration's Center for Non-Profit Leadership.

Under this program, juniors work with nonprofit organizations in exchange for a certificate and minor to go with any major on campus.

Betty Jo Licata, dean of the Williamson College, said the goal is to benefit the students and the nonprofits.

"Increasing the leadership capacity in nonprofit organizations has a longterm benefit for all stakeholders. Our Center for Nonprofit Leadership and our director, Laura Dewberry, continue to develop impactful programs that engage our students and the Zoldan-Yampolsky Family Executive Fellows Program is an important addition to the center's briefings," Licata said in a news release.

Zoldan said YSU has been important to his family throughout the years.

"YSU has been the shining star of our community and all of our family members have benefited from the university's presence here," Zoldan said in the release.
