Woman accused of carrying 9 pounds of cocaine on turnpike wants evidence tossed
An Illinois woman who was allegedly caught carrying nearly nine pounds of cocaine is asking a federal judge to throw out the evidence in her case.
U.S. District Court Judge Sara Lioi is considering a motion to suppress filed by Tashe Goins attorney.
According to an affidavit, last June the Ohio State Highway Patrol stopped an SUV for a traffic violation along the eastbound lanes of the turnpike in Braceville Township.
The patrol says a drug-sniffing dog led them to the discovery of a suitcase containing approximately four kilograms of cocaine.
Goins was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
The defense motion to suppress claims that the trooper who pulled the SUV over has not given a reason for conducting the traffic stop.
In answering the motion, prosecutors say that Goins committed a "marked lane violation" because her SUV drove over a white dotted lane divider by two to three feet, before "quickly" pulling back into her lane.
The trial in the case is scheduled for May 10.
