NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The man shot and killed by police Thursday in Lawrence County after he would not stop beating a woman may have a deeper criminal history.

Thirty-three-year-old Juan Carter Hernandez, who lived in Campbell, died on the scene after being shot by officers.

Pennsylvania State Police say the assault victim, 24-year-old Chyna Cardena of Springdale, Arkansas, passed away from injuries caused by the assault.

Reports say Hernandez assaulted the woman with a blunt instrument in the backyard of a home on S. New Castle Street.

21 News has learned more about Hernandez's potential criminal history.

An article from the Jacksonville Daily News in North Carolina reported in 2014 that a 26-year-old man named Juan Carter Hernandez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Hernandez allegedly killed his 20-year-old then-wife Kandace Hernandez inside of their home in 2011.

He was sentenced to 8 to 10 years in prison for the killing.

The Lawrence County incident is still under investigation.
