Warren man imprisoned for carjacking, police chases, choking corrections officer

RAVENNA, Ohio - A Warren man has started serving a sentence of 15 to 18 years in prison following his conviction on charges filed for a violent carjacking, two police chases, the theft of a police cruiser, and choking a jail guard.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has taken custody of 22-year-old Nathaniel Crew, who was sentenced by a Portage County judge on Wednesday after Crew pleaded guilty to kidnapping, grand theft of a motor vehicle, assault on a corrections officer, failure to comply with a police order, and escape.
The case stems from incidents that occurred back in July.
Warren police say Crew allegedly struck a 54-year-old man on the head and choked him until he passed out in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store on Niles Road. When the victim regained consciousness, the victim said his Jeep Wrangler was gone.
Warren Township Police spotted the Jeep and, according to the report, chased it at speeds up to 100 miles per hour until the Jeep crashed on State Route 59 in Ravenna Township.
Crew was arrested, but police say he managed to move the handcuffs he was wearing to the front of his body, then slid into the front seat of the Warren Township Police cruiser and drove away.
After another pursuit, police caught up with Crew and arrested him again.
At the Portage County Jail, authorities say Crew placed a chokehold on a corrections officer and tried to drag her into a cell.
Charges in Warren Municipal Court filed connection with the carjacking and chase were dropped after he was sentenced in Portage County.
