As more COVID-19 vaccines roll out with different efficacy rates, people may wonder which one is best.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 66% effective and Pfizer and Moderna are 95% effective, meaning these are the percentage chances an individual will not test positive for the virus after getting the vaccine.

"It's the difference between very good and excellent," Texas A&M University Virologist Dr. Ben Neuman said.

Neuman said Pfizer and Moderna offer more protection, but there are pros and cons to the vaccines.

Neuman said Pfizer and Moderna vaccines could have more side effects because they were chemically made with complete control to be as effective as possible.

"With the mRNA vaccines, it's essentially all chemicals...and with a reaction like that you can scale it up," he said.

Johnson & Johnson went a different route with a vaccine that offers less protection with one dose, but also fewer side effects.

"There are people out there who haven't gotten the vaccine or who are on the fence, who are worried, and if side effects are the thing you're worried about, you can still get pretty good protection and lesser side effects, and that's J & J's deal," he said.

Neuman added he believes the one-dose vaccine option is good for elders or for nursing homes and feels the two-dose vaccines are well equipped for those out in the community who could use the double protection.

However, by Johnson & Johnson choosing the one-dose vaccine,  he said it allows for expediency and another tool to end this virus.

As of now, Neuman reminds the public individuals don't get to choose the vaccine they get at this time and urges all people to take whichever vaccine is available to them.
