Niles woman wants justice for husband

NILES, Ohio - A grieving mother of three children in Niles, wants justice for her husband and the surviving victim, Dylan Hylte, who was rushed to the emergency room fighting for his life after they were shot outside a home in Niles on March 1, 2021.
Stacey Carr thought she would grow old with her husband of 16 years Thomas, or TJ but on Monday she will touch his cheek one last time.
She will also try to help her children as they struggle to understand their dad won't be there each day, nor there to decorate for Easter or celebrate upcoming holidays and birthdays.
"It's going to be always horrible. I'm worried about how our three year old is going to react. She idolized him. He was her everything. And our boys it's really going to hit them hard," said Carr.
The mother of three tells WFMJ news her oldest son is still trying to understand why one of his best friends relatives shot and killed his dad. They had no reason to fear my husband. They knew him. My husband was good to that family."
She tells WFMJ news, her husband had walked up the same sidewalk outside the home on West First Street to deliver the family a deep fried turkey. And that he walked up the same walkway and driveway to take them dinner on another occasion when the younger brother decided his mom and grandmother would probably like some of the food he had enjoyed at the Carr family table.
"The younger son was always over our house, He was always over there playing with Dillon's younger brother too. They were like the Three Musketeers. There was one holiday on Thanksgiving where we made a five deep fried turkeys, and we brought one it down to his family. That was when we met the middle brother. HIs mother and grandmother seemed appreciative. We also met his mother when we walked her son home at night after dinner," explained Carr.
Carr added, "The younger son went Trick or Treating with us. HIs mom went to go get a mask to go along with his costume, and her son whet with us, there were no lights on at the house so my husband walked him up to the door and one of the brothers answered the door, so yet again they met my husband at that time as well. My husband walked the younger son home after he had dinner with us, although he would see them later at night riding bikes and stuff, he still wanted to make sure our son's friend got home safely. That's just the kind of man he was."
WFMJ news asked why did Thomas her husband go to the house so late at night with two teen boys. Carr told us the boys mother works the afternoon shift and does not get home until late. She told us her husband wanted to talk with the mom about troubles in the neighborhood, and threats directed at the teens her husband was with. A few nights prior her husband and son's compound bows were stolen from inside their truck. They took video and Carr explained that the video of the vehicle looks like the one the teens drive around in and since they would not talk he wanted to talk with their mom. WFMJ has that video.
Carr showed our reporter a video from the night of the shooting. The video captured show two people walking slowly up to the house on West First Street. Video shows the two stop. They are standing there when two when suddenly one teen steps forward and fires a gun several times. You can see the muzzle flashes from the bullets being fired.
"There was no aggressive movement towards the teen who took several steps forward at my husband to shoot and kill him. The other victim, Dylan Hylte, was just standing there with my husband. I believe he was shot 8 times, two times in the back as he was running away for his life. I was told my husband was shot five times and he died right there. I believe there were two shooters. Detectives have not said if there were," said Carr.
Carr said, "A Niles police detective told me that my husband and the teens should not have gone to the house, I believe that is victim blaming. If the mom and her one son and another teen were so afraid, why didn't they stay indoors and call the police? Who comes outside with a gun or guns?: My husband had a soda with him, you can see that in the video in his hand. He had walked to the Circle K to get a soda. This is not self defense. We do not have guns. I want to know why the teen who is not legally old enough to own a gun had access to loaded guns in the first place?"
"The main thing I can't understand is how they are still out in the community? I don't believe the neighborhood is safe. I don't understand how there are no criminal charges filed yet. You have a video, you have witnesses." emphasized Carr.
