Officials recognized a Newton Falls woman for making the life-saving decision to wear a seatbelt.

Mary Metzger of Newton Falls became part of what's called the Saved by the Belt Club on Monday. It's a joint effort by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and more than 400 Ohio law enforcement agencies to show the importance of buckling up.

Back in February of 2020, Metzger was involved in a crash along Interstate 76 in Mahoning County. Metzger's car was totaled, but she stayed in her seat thanks to her seatbelt.

Data from 2020 shows 487 people in Ohio were killed in traffic crashes where a seatbelt was not used.
