Wednesday marks National Transgender Day of Visibility and a flag ceremony in Youngstown celebrated all those in the LGBTQ+ community.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown is celebrating the diversity of the transgender community with a flag-raising ceremony.

The Church has flown the Rainbow Flag of the LGBTQ+ Community since 2008 when it became a welcoming congregation to those of all sexual orientations and gender expressions.

"We are losing too many members of our beloved community due to transphobia, hate, bigotry, and policies that threaten the life and livelihood of those with marginalized identities," said Rev. Joseph Boyd of The Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown.

Rev. Boyd hopes that displaying the flag will represent that the church can be a sanctuary for all people of the LGBTQ+ community and other marginalized groups.

In 2021 alone 82 pieces of anti-transgender legislation have been introduced in multiple states across the United States.

This year surpassing the 2020 total of 79 pieces of legislation marking it the highest number of anti-transgender bills in history
