Dallas Young, a veteran Trumbull deputy of 14 years, was summarily fired Wednesday by Sheriff Paul Monroe.

He wasn’t out of work very long. Less than 24 hours later, Young was hired by the police department in the community where he resides, Newton Falls.

The sheriff’s spokesman would not explain the reasons for the dismissal when questioned by 21 News.

“I can only confirm that on March 31, Deputy Dallas Young was terminated by the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office,” Chief Deputy Joseph Dragovich said. “Beyond that, there will be no further comment.”

However, Dave Lynch, Newton Falls manager, confirmed that he signed the papers Thursday hiring Young as a member of the police force.

The papers were submitted by Police Chief Gene Fixler.

“I am enthusiastic that he is joining the department,” Lynch said.

Other details about the hiring were not immediately available.

Last May, Fixler and Newton Falls Mayor Ken Kline had been very supportive of a proposal by Young to convert the village park to a park designed to honor all Newton Falls safety forces over the years.

Young had suggested erecting monuments in the park to those who died while still serving in the police and fire departments.

Young had been employed by Trumbull County for 24 years serving as a corrections officer for the first 10 before being hired as a deputy in March 2007.

Prior to his dismissal, Young had been serving as deputy in Newton Township.

He was president of Deputies Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 137, the group’s bargaining unit.

Young has not responded to multiple messages left by 21 News.

During his service as deputy, Young had been active in community service activities.

News archives show he participated in such events as “Shop with a Cop” and various holiday-themed festivities.

In 2016, he was honored for saving an elderly Newton Falls couple when fire engulfed their home.

In 2015, Young and another deputy were cleared by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal investigation for their role in the fatal shooting of a Southington man who had fired a handgun at them as they responded to a 911 call.
