COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Democrats are calling for an apology from Ohio Lieutenant Governor John Husted following his comments about COVID-19.

According to the release, the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus is calling for the apology following a tweet sent out by Husted calling the coronavirus the "Wuhan Virus."

The following statement was released by the Democratic Caucus:

"Words matter. At a time of increased violence against the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, the words used by the lieutenant governor can reinforce racial tropes that have been recently used to incite violence against members of the AAPI community and risk putting them in danger. We support and validate the concerns of the members of the AAPI community who tell us they feel offended or threatened. We call on the lieutenant governor to listen to his Asian American neighbors and apologize."

In a series of tweets in a thread connected to the tweet above, Husted said the tweet referred only to the Chinese government.

The tweets are currently still up on his account despite calls for them to be deleted.
