'Historic Marker Day' targets cleaning of signs

The last Friday of every April will now be forever recognized as National Historic Marker Day.
Today was the first-ever event and members of the Poland Historical Society celebrated today by cleaning up Poland's seven signs.
According to the Historical marker Database, there are over 138,000 historical markers in the United States.
Many of them require cleaning and maintenance, which can add years to a marker's life.
"We would like to maintain them as part of the historic nature of the Village so people in the long term future will be able to see these markers," said Dave Smith, a historical society member.
Just a little soap and a brush was needed to clean the signs. The signs were mainly dusty, but the ones near the roads had some salt from the winter season and needed the most work.
"It started with the Pomeroy foundation and they asked people across the nation to clean markers today and we plan on doing this every year after this," said Laurie Fox, President of the Poland Historical Society.
Participants are encouraged to share photos f their marker cleaning efforts on social media by using #NationalMakerDay. On Tuesday, May 4, a photo gallery of the submitted images will be created and published on Facebook and Twitter.
