CANFIELD, Ohio - Located just behind Hilltop Elementary in Canfield, the newly renovated outdoor learning area called 'The Cardinal Nest' was revealed Monday evening at the school.

"It's hands on," said Alexis Novotny, 3rd grade teacher and facilitator of The Cardinal Nest. "It's also a place where we can have the regular classroom. There's lots of areas that teachers can be involved in. We're hoping to add more."

Originally built in the 1970's, the 23-acre forest is equipped with trails, classrooms, plants and several learning areas for the district's students.

"We have wifi, a vernal pool and a hawk's nest," said Jenny Beil, 3rd grade teacher and facilitator of The Cardinal Nest. "We have animals, trees that are identified by the Eagle Scouts and tons of trails."

There are two renovated outdoor classrooms that the students can use. District teachers say students always get excited because of the change of atmosphere in learning outdoors.

"You can bring your class out, you can see the different animals but you can also learn with nature," Beil said. "Just sitting, reading and enjoying the peace and quiet."

"One of the positives of the pandemic has been getting kids outside," said Joe Knoll, Canfield Local School District Superintendent to 21 News. "We're looking forward to all the different learning opportunities the kids are going to have in store for them."

The renovations aren't done yet, the district plans to add more to The Cardinal Nest, including an amphitheater and more.

"One of the architects in town has graciously donated their time," Novotny said, "and they wanted to add a water lab and include sun dials. So, there's help going to all different areas hopefully down the road.
