Demolition experts plan to use explosives to take down a smokestack at the 66-year-old former Ohio Edison Electric Generation Plant in Weathersfield Township on Friday.

According to a notice from the fire department, a demolition company will use controlled explosives between 8 and 9 a.m. to topple the 400-foot stack at the vacant plant on Belmont Avenue along the Mahoning River.

Officials say safety precautions will be in place to protect people in the area and the fire department will be on the scene.

Nearby residents may hear the explosion.  The Fire Department says there is no need to call 911.

According to the Niles Historical Society, the twelve-story plant with two 300-foot-high stacks cost $35 million and was dedicated in 1954.

The plant burned 2,500 tons of coal each day to generate more than 200,000 kilowatts of electricity.
