YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Police and animal agents seized several dogs and cats from a property in Youngstown Wednesday morning.

Agencies were on the scene just after 11 a.m. after they said a passerby called them to report that they heard barking from the vacant house on Marion Avenue.

They said firefighters had to break the door to get into the home.

21 News was told at least four Pitbulls and an unknown number of cats were taken by animal agents to get checked out.

Officials with Animal Charity said that the house is "deplorable" and hoarded with trash and feces.

"There was probably a foot worth of trash and feces throughout and then some places higher up the walls, maybe three, four-feet worth of trash and feces," said  Jane Macmurcay, Coordinator for Animal Charity.

Definitely dehydrated, hot and dirty, yes, and hungry," said Macmurcay, describing the animals' conditions. "We have them going to meet with our medical team right now to determine injuries, illnesses and the state of their condition."

She doesn't believe that the animals were a part of a dog fighting operation at this time, but that the animals were abandoned.

Authorities continue to investigate.
