GIRARD, Ohio - A Girard teacher received a state award for her devotion to meet the needs of children with disabilities.

Erin Loomis is in her fourth year at Prospect Elementary School and on Wednesday, she received the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Teacher Award. The award honors the late Dr. Franklin B. Walter, who was the Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1977 until 1991.

School officials say Loomis was nominated with other educators throughout the state. Each region picks one educator or team to receive the award.

Reacting to the honor, Loomis said teaching is something she's always aspired to do.

"I have always wanted to be an educator since I was very young, and it was my background at Walsh University.. the professors encouraged me to take on more and be a leader," Loomis said.

Loomis added that she's passionate about including everyone since all students have the ability to learn.
