WEATHERSFIELD TWP., Ohio - A 400-foot-tall smokestack fell to the ground Friday afternoon after officials had some trouble demolishing it earlier.

A crowd of people gathered in the morning to watch as demolition experts planned to use explosives to bring down the smokestack at the 66-year-old former Ohio Edison Electric Generation Plant in Weathersfield Township.

What they saw wasn't what they came for.

At 9 a.m. came the sound of a blast with a cloud of dust and smoke shooting out from the base of the smokestack.

The stack began to lean but then froze, bringing comments from one member of the crowd comparing it to the famous "Leaning Tower of Pisa."

After waiting about five minutes, a pickup truck drove towards the crippled but still standing structure.

After the first attempt didn't work, Judy Harley with Lane LifeTrans brought in extra EMS officials as a precaution because workers had to get close to the smokestack again to set up for an afternoon attempt to demolish it.

Around 4:30 p.m., officials successfully demolished the smokestack.
