New Castle Schools were placed on lockdown Friday evening during the school's promenade event after police say a credible threat was made to the school and students.

New Castle Police Chief told 21 News prom will go on as planned for the district's students and the suspect is not believed to be a student. 

The New Castle City Police Department says they received information about possible threats sometime on Friday.

Through the investigation, police investigators say they were able to speak to the individual that made the alleged threats on the phone.

While talking to the suspect police say the individual reiterated their threats.

Officers say they were able to pinpoint the possible location of the individual to be near the New Castle High School.

Police say at that time a determination was made that the threats were credible and the school would be placed on lockdown.

New Castle High School at that time was hosting Promenade for students attending Prom later Friday evening.

New Castle Police Officers and the Lawrence County Special Response Team were able to safely exit students and guests from the school to their vehicles. 

New Castle Police say they are actively investigating the situation and are attempting to locate the individual responsible for the alleged threats.
