Poland school resource officer on unpaid leave pending investigation

More information is being released from state officials after a Poland Township school resource officer is placed on unpaid administrative leave.
Trustees approved the unpaid administrative leave for Poland Township school resource officer, Steve Kent on Wednesday evening.
"We basically worked with the prosecutor's office and we go off the recommendation of our legal council," said Eric Ungaro, Poland Trustee to 21 News. "That's the route we took, which was unpaid administrative leave, effective immediately."
Officials from the township said Officer Steve Kent, who is also an Austintown Township trustee, was placed on leave pending an investigation involving BCI.
Poland trustees and the Poland Township Police Department could not provide any more details of the alleged incident Wednesday evening.
BCI officials told 21 News that the alleged incident is being investigated by the Special Victims Unit, which specializes in investigating victim-centered crimes affecting populations that benefit from specialized law enforcement handling.
Examples include children, the elderly and human trafficking victims and the crimes can include abduction, sexual assault, financial abuse and/or physical abuse.
According to a letter sent to BCI from Poland's police chief, the officer allegedly committed a felony offense while on and off duty.
21 News reached out to Poland schools for comment and they say it is unlikely school officials will release a comment on Wednesday.
Fellow Austintown Township Trustees Jim Davis and Ken Carano said that they are waiting for more information on the case as to whether Kent should step aside from his leadership position during the investigation.
21 News has also attempted to reach Officer Kent several times and will continue to as this story develops.
