YOUNGSTOWN - Youngstown’s Market Street Bridge will be illuminated with purple lights Tuesday night in observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

People are also being urged to include a hint of purple in their wardrobe as Adult Protective Services of Mahoning County hopes to stop the abuse of older citizens.

According to Adult Protective Service Administrator Krishmu Shipmon, physical abuse is only one component of elderly victimization. Many suffer financial exploitation, neglect, and emotional abuse.

“These elders are from all walks of life, all races, and all ethnic groups and they live in our neighborhoods,” says Shipmon. They are afraid to speak out because the abuser is often a member of their own family or a caregiver whom they are dependent on. They fear retribution, lack of care, or being institutionalization.

If you suspect that someone is a victim of elder abuse, you can report your suspicions anonymously. Contact Adult Protective Services Department at 330-884-6952.
