On this first official day of summer the last thing you're probably thinking about is taxes but some good news is on the way for those who have children.

Starting July 15th the monthly child tax credit will kick in, providing up to $300 per child to eligible parents.

Each child up to age five will get $300 a month and each child from ages 6 to 17 will get $250 a month.

"These tax cuts finally recognize the care givers. Taking care of children is work. They will give families a little extra security each month to keep up with the cost of raising a family," said Senator, Sherrod Brown.

To qualify income for single filers needs to be below $75,000 or $150,000 for those married or filing jointly.

According to Congressman Tim Ryan, The child tax credit is expected to cut child poverty in half.

"They will get a check or direct deposit from the irs starting July 15th through the end of the year. It will have a huge impact on families in Ohio," said Ryan.

Believe it or not, there may be a reason to opt out of getting the tax credits.

"I would recommend that people who do not claim their children every year, cases of divorced or separated parents, that they would opt out because if they get those advancements and they do not claim their child in 2021, then they would have to pay that back," said tax preparer, Melissa Zetts of Tax 29 in Cortland.

To opt out or to get more information you can go to the IRS website.

The Child tax credits will continue through December.
