YOUNGSTOWN - A Youngstown man who was arrested with explosive arrows at his home has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison.

A Federal Judge handed down the sentence to 51-year-old Oliver Smith on Tuesday after Smith pleaded guilty to possessing explosive devices, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of an unregistered silencer.

According to an affidavit, during searches of Smith’s Hillman Street home in early October, agents found arrows filled with explosive powder, wrapped in tape with nails, and tipped with detonators.

Authorities also found two explosive devices filled with ball bearings that could act as shrapnel.

In addition to seizing a gun with an unregistered silencer, the search turned up primers, ball bearings, wires, and chemicals the FBI says could be used to make bombs.

The search was conducted after receiving a tip, according to the affidavit.

“This defendant allegedly possessed multiple, functional improvised explosive devices that presented a significant and unacceptable threat to others,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Brennan.
