The final piece of the financial puzzle is in place to begin a project that will help improve safety in Canfield Township.

Mahoning County Commissioners will be presenting a check for $99,000 to the township.

Canfield's Township Manager and Road Superintendent, Keith Rogers, says the money will connect the Metro Parks and Kirk Road bike trailheads while allowing people to stop and enjoy the township community park.

"IF ANYONE WANTED TO COME TO THE PARK FROM THE BIKE TRAIL THEY WOULD HAVE TO COME DOWN IN FRONT OF THE MANUFACTURING PLANT WHERE THERE IS SEMI TRUCK TRAFFIC, SO THIS IS A SAFER ALTERNATIVE FOR SMALLER CHILDREN AND PARENTS WITH SMALL CHILDREN TO GET TO THE PARK SAFELY," said Rogers.

The total project will cost $496,000, with the money coming from grants.

Once the project is underway, the connector is expected to take about a year to complete.
