PA approves Aqua Pennsylvania to replace customer-owned lead service lines

SHARON, Pa. - Some Aqua Shenango customers may be getting new water pipes after the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) approved the replacement of lead service lines.
According to the release, the commission voted 4-0 to approve the settlement.
Aqua Pennsylvania provides water service to more than 443,000 customers in the state with 48,000 of those in the Sharon area.
Under the approved plan, Aqua Pennsylvania is expected to replace up to 200 customer-owned lead service lines per year with a max budget of $800,000.
According to the release, residential customers waiting for line replacements will be given a water filter for lead if testing shows their water has a lead level above the action level set by the EPA.
Under certain conditions, Aqua will also reimburse customers who recently paid for their own lead service line replacement.
Aqua Shenango said it knows of 57 customers in the area with lead pipes but said there could be more.
