MERCER, Pa. - A Grove City businessman is headed for trial for the bludgeoning death of his wife.

Charges of Criminal Homicide and Aggravated Assault against 58-year-old Randall Harland Leaf were held for Mercer County Common Pleas Court following a hearing before a district magistrate on Wednesday.

Leaf allegedly struck his newlywed wife, 53-year-old Gretchen Pallack, over the head with a dumbbell at the apartment they shared over the Superior Bedding store both operated on South Broad Street.

Police found Leaf in the apartment bleeding from lacerations on his wrists and neck that officers believe were self-inflicted.

Leaf told officers that his wife, Gretchen Leaf, was downstairs, where police found her body.

Following surgery at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Leaf was taken to jail where he remains held without bond.

District Attorney Peter Acker told 21 News earlier that a court has ordered that Leaf will be transferred to Torrance State Hospital in Pittsburgh where he will undergo a mental evaluation.

Leaf is scheduled for a formal arraignment before Judge Ronald Amrhein on September 21.
