1996: About 800 people attend a memorial service at New Wilmington Presbyterian Church for David Babb, 13, who died in the explosion of TWA Flight 800 over the Atlantic Ocean.
A Mahoning County grand jury indicts five men in connection with the June 11 shooting death of 3-year-old Jessica Ballew. Sidney Cornwell, 19, charged with aggravated murder, could face the death penalty if convicted.
A Honda Gold Wing Aspencade rolls off the assembly line at Marysville, Ohio, the one-millionth motorcycle assembled at the plant since it opened 17 years ago.
1981: The Ohio House education funding subcommittee meets at Boardman High School where a dozen local residents and school board members stress the need for more state funding of education.
A study by the Brookings Institution says the nation will lose 12,000 steel jobs over the next decade with or without a federal effort to tax steel imports because U.S. production facilities are aging.
The Rev. Frances Snock, pastor of St. Matthias Church, speaking at the 49th Jednota Day meeting of the First Catholic Slovak Union at the Shady Run Picnic Grove, says organizations like the Jednota perpetuate and preserve Slovakian heritage.

Gov. John Gilligan names Albert J. Shipka to the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees.
1946: A 1946 Buick purchased two weeks ago by Peter Amon, president of G.I. Music, is stolen. The thief escaped across the Pennsylvania line after a chase from Girard through Youngstown during which 17 shots were fired.
Youngstown area residents enjoyed an unusually good display of the Aurora Borealis. The area got a warning that the Northern Lights were imminent when telegraph circuits and other electronics went haywire.
Paul Doran, 38, of New Middletown is killed when he swerves his disabled truck to avoid an unidentified woman and child on the N. Bridge St. hill in Struthers. The truck snapped a utility pole and slammed into a porch.
