1996: Local delegates to the Republican National Convention in San Diego are concerned about the focus conservatives are putting on the issue of abortion. "I'm sick of hearing about it," says David W. Johnson,  chairman of the Columbiana County Republican Party. Abortion, he says, "matters very little in the big scheme of whether this nation moves forward in the 21 st century."
 
The Steel Valley Cluster Dog Show opens at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Four kennel clubs,   Columbiana, Fort Steuben,  Beaver, and Mahoning-Shenango, are participating. 
 
Personnel from the Trumbull County Chapter of the American Red Cross go to Kanawha City, W. Va.,  to assist with relief efforts after a flood.
 
1981: The air traffic controllers strike seriously disrupts travel plans of scores of Youngstown area business and vacation travelers. Only three supervisors out of a force of 28 employees are manning the control tower at Youngstown Municipal Airport.
 
Attys. E. Winther McCroom and John Breckenridge, who represented policemen in their fight for promotions in the Youngstown Police Department, file an application for compensation in U.S. District Court for $243,387. The payment would come from Youngstown's general revenue fund. 
 
U.S. District Judge Thomas D. Lambros dismisses a $250,000 lawsuit filed under the Federal Tort Claims Act seeking $250,000 for a Youngstown man who claimed he contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome after receiving the federally sponsored swine flu vaccine. 
 
1971: The Market Street Bridge over the Mahoning River is one of the 10 highest priority bridges in the state for replacement under a new federal bridge program.
 
Major shortcomings in public health in Mahoning County include services for pregnant teenagers, pre-and post-natal nursing care, and family planning, according to the Ohio Department of Health. 
 
The Buckeye Elks slip into first place in the Class AA Baseball League by downing the American Legion, 7-2. 
 
1946: New car dealers in the area are reported giving preferential delivery to customers who order the "works" -- seat covers, spotlights, radios, heaters, and other optional items. Customers who balk are told they'll have to wait for their new car. 
 
Casino DeVincent, the veteran who picketed bookie joints several months ago, has disappeared and several hangers-on with ties to local gamblers are being questioned.
 
Harry A. Husted, inventor, and former Youngstown man, says that as far as science has come, steelworkers still need not worry about plastics replacing steel in auto production.
