YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi held a memorial service for two late members Saturday.

The service honored the late Honorable Judge Nathaniel Jones and James Harvey.

Kappa Alpha Psi members gathered at Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Youngstown to honor the two men.

Judge Nathaniel Jones passed away at the age of 93 in early 2020 after a career as a federal judge and civil rights leader.

Jones served for more than two decades on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati and served as general counsel for the NAACP. Jones was also instrumental in furthering the abolition of apartheid in South Africa.

He was appointed to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati in 1979 by former President Jimmy Carter and held the position until his retirement in 2002. In February 2003, Congress passed a resolution naming the federal building and U.S. courthouse in downtown Youngstown after him.

The group also honored James Harvey Jr. who was politically active in the community.

Harvey canvased his neighborhood during election cycles to ensure his neighbors were registered and had access to vote.
