COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) provided a status update on Monday regarding the ongoing investigation of an incident on Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster ride occurring Sunday, Aug. 15 in which a woman waiting in line was struck in the head.

ODA has confirmed investigation revealed that an L-shaped bracket approximately the size of an adult male's hand known as a flag plate dislodged from the left side of one of the ride's train cars striking the victim in the head. The flag plates are used to communicate to the ride's operating system that the car has passed a portion of the track.

Investigation also revealed that half of the bolts securing the flag plate to the train body had also dislodged and that the brake bracket area of the track, which slows the cars at the end of the ride showed signs of impact and deformation. Several horizontal track beams showed signs of impact as well within approximately 25 feet of the damaged brake bracket.

The train car has been sent to a laboratory for the remaining bolts from the train body to be examined. The report is expected to provide more insight on how the flag plate may have dislodged. The investigation is currently ongoing.

ODA has reached out to the family of the victim to inform them of the status of the investigation and say they will continue to work to determine how exactly the flag plate dislodged.

ODA has ordered the Top Thrill Dragster ride to be shut down throughout the course of the investigation and pending subsequent reinspection.
