Red Cross: Finding volunteers among highest priority
The Red Cross says finding more volunteers is among their highest priorities right now.
Communications Officer Jim McIntyre with the Red Cross of Northern Ohio says the organization has seen both a drop in the number of volunteers, as well as an increase in need.
"The number of volunteers we have isn't adequate to address the needs of the people that are affected," said Mcintyre. "Because of the number of disasters occurring over the past several years, the number increasing every year, and this year not being an exception. We are finding it more and more difficult to carry out our mission."
McIntyre says as of right now more than two dozen volunteers from the Northern Ohio region are deployed across the country. Some are in California assisting with the wild fires, others are in Tennessee dealing with flooding, and others were sent to the Gulf Coast in response to Hurricane Ida.
None of these volunteers though are from the Mahoning Valley.
The Red Cross is seeking individuals trained in health care, as well as individuals trained in mental health care.
But, the backbone of the red cross remains those who assist in shelters.
Volunteer opportunities can be found at RedCross.org.
Training for volunteers can be done online and only requires a couple of hours, said McIntyre.
More information on the training process and what kind of work volunteers would be doing, can be found in this web extra video:
