Second Harvest Food Bank joins Feeding America's Hunger Action Month

MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - For September, the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley is teaming up with Feeding America's Hunger Action Month Campaign.
The Hunger Action Month Campaign wants to inspire people to get involved and to raise awareness about the hunger issues in America and throughout the Mahoning Valley.
Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley is joining Feeding America to raise awareness of people who face hunger. They are working with food banks around the country to make an impact on food insecurity in communities, and are asking for the publics support. This campaign focuses on the choices that millions of Americans must make between food and other basic needs.
"For many, a daily meal is a simple choice of what to eat," said Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America. "For people facing hunger, a daily meal poses a very different type of choice. It's often an impossible decision between food or other crucial needs, such as electricity, childcare, or medicine. Nobody should be forced to make a choice to go hungry. With the public's support, we can come together to help people achieve long-term food security, so they no longer have to make such tough decisions."
There are several different ways in which people throughout the Mahoning County can help raise awareness throughout September. Members of the Valley can host a food drive/fundraiser by calling 330-792-5522, make a donation at www.mahoningvalleysecondharvest.org where 1 dollar equals 6 meals, and wear orange on September 17 and share your photos on Facebook @SHFBMV with the hashtag, #HungerActionDay.
"The Food Bank through our member agencies fill thousands of requests for food each week from people in the Mahoning Valley," said Michael Iberis, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank. "Food should not be an impossible choice that anyone has to make."
