YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - There is a new social media platform that just broke on the scene this week.

MEL Talk - which is an acronym for "My Everyday Life" - is described as "the marriage of Twitter, meets Ticktock, meets the TV show 'The View.'"

CEO of SBL Venture Capital and Boardman native Brian Kessler says the app has been three years in the making, and they believe it offers something other social media platforms do not.

"Like, Ticktock is very video oriented, and we are very video oriented. But Ticktock is very performance directed, like you preform to people, where MEL is about a conversation. Literally people talk," said Kessler. "It creates this really wonderful conversation."

Those on the app post a video of them asking a question - any question. And other users respond by also posting a video.

Kessler said the idea for the app came from a desire to keep memories of a person alive.

"I've been fascinated with how the brain works and the truth is at a certain point when a person passes away you lose who that person was, it's very hard, you have memories of them, (and) you can now go on Facebook and see their old Facebook posts, but MEL actually let's you feel like you're talking to, and listening to stories that they did, things that they were interested in, comments that they had," explained Kessler.

And since the conversation within the app is through video, rather than written comments, Kessler believes the social media platform it creates a safer social media space.

"Where social media is very - there's a wall that people can hide behind - but because on MEL they're live conversations that are videos, it's harder for people to troll because you are really talking to someone," said Kessler. "So in that respect, it gives it a much safer, more interesting place."

Kessler said YSU helped with some of the regional testing of the app before it was launched.

MEL can now be downloaded from the Apple store, but is not yet available for Android devices.
