Organizations throughout the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys have planned events over several days to remember nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in a series of terrorist attacks twenty years ago on September 11.

Some of the events are being held on what has become Patriot Day, dedicated to the memory of those who perished at the World Trade Towers, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Austintown

  • 9/11 Memorial Service

Speakers from the Austintown Fire and Police Departments as well as the military will remember the 20th anniversary of the attacks.

Beloit

  • 9/11 Community Commemoration
  • 10 a.m., Saturday, September 11, 2021
  • West Branch High School and Beloit Community Park

The Beloit Fire Association will present a 9/11 Community Commemoration remembering 20 years since the 9/11 attacks.

The free event honoring fire, police, military, doctors, nurses and EMS will begin at West Branch High School with a parade that will end at Beloit Community Park, with a memorial program to follow.

People are invited to bring their lawn chairs to enjoy a free concert at 1 p.m.  There will also be children's games and a 50/50 raffle.

Boardman

  • Patriot Day Tree Planting

  • Stadium Drive Elementary School, 111 Stadium Drive

The Patriot Day Tree Planting Ceremony has been a tradition at Stadium Drive Elementary. More than 350 students grades K-3 will assemble outside the school. The ceremony lasts approximately 30 minutes. Boardman fire and police officers will also be in attendance

Boardman

  • Walk of Courage presentation

  • Boardman Fire Department, Market Street

Center Intermediate Principal Michael Masucci and 9 students representing more than 800 4th through 6th graders will present a framed historic print called “Walk of Courage” to the Boardman Fire Department in front of the Emergency Responders Memorial located at Fire Station #71.

Grove City

  • 'Never Forget' commemoration
  • Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, through Saturday, Sept. 11

Grove City College will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States with a series of in-person events and online experiences.

 "Never Forget: A 20th Anniversary Reflection on 9/11" begins Friday, Sept. 3 with the virtual opening of a curated online exhibit that tells the story of that fateful day from a Grove City College perspective. Visit the exhibit at alumni.gcc.edu/neverforget911.

 Through a digital gallery of quotes, photos, oral history recordings and an archive of firsthand accounts, alumni and other members of the College community explain in their own words what they experienced on 9/11 and how events of that day changed their lives.

 It includes over 50 eyewitness reports, stories, and observances from alumni who lived and worked in Manhattan and Washington, D.C., alumni in law enforcement who rushed to secure the Shanksville, Pa. crash site of Flight 93, students who were on campus at the time and many others whose recollections add to the understanding of one of the milestone events in American history.

College President Paul J. McNulty '80, a former top Department of Justice official who was "in the room where it happened" as the federal government reacted and responded to the attacks, contributed to the exhibit.

Other anniversary events include:

On Saturday, Sept. 11, Grove City College will present a 9/11 halftime tribute featuring the Wolverine Marching Band during the annual Night Game.

On Friday, Oct. 1, the Grove City College Orchestra concert will present a special program in honor of all whose lives were forever changed by the attacks.

Howland

  • 9/11 Remembrance

The Medici Museum of Art plans to be Eastern Ohio's central point of remembering the 2,977 people who lost their lives during the attacks on 9/11, including 412 first responders. A solemn ceremony will be streamed from the NYC 9/11 Museum for local viewing. Healing through artistic expression from local artists and survivors and families of those affected.

Members of the community to view the exhibits, express gratitude to local first responders, and bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a free concert on the lawn by country artist Ricky Lee.

09:30: The event opens. Gallery opens. 09:45: Opening remarks, a moment of silence for those who perished in the morning of September 11th

10:00: Live stream program from NYC 9/11 museum

12:00: Lunch at food trucks, interactive displays

Afternoon - Tribute to First Responders and the American Spirit

1 p.m – 4 p.m.: Opening remarks, meet, greet, and thank area first responders.

5:30 p.m.  Concert by country artist Ricky Lee

6:15 p.m. 50/50 drawing, raffle drawing

7:30 p.m.  Lighting of Tribute in Light

9 p.m.  Event concludes.

Lisbon

Patriot Day Ceremony

Lisbon High School Juniors and Seniors will display 2977 American Flags for each life lost on 9/11.  The flags, donated by The John J. Welsh Post 275 of Lisbon American Legion and The Lisbon School District will be displayed in the shape of the Twin Towers and The Pentagon. The flags will be on display from Friday, September 10, 2021 through Monday, September 13, 2021.

Vienna

9/11 Memorial

  • Vienna Fire Station, 833 Youngstown Kingsville Rd.

The fire department will be hosting an event commemorating twenty years since terrorists conducted attacks in New York, Washington, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The event is open to the public. Masks are optional.

West Middlesex

In memory of the fallen firefighters and police officers who sacrificed their lives in the World Trade Center collapse

Youngstown

The remembrance, sponsored by the YSU Department of Criminal Justice and Consumer Sciences, includes members of the YSU Police Academy reading the names of first responders who died in the attacks.
