Sacred Heart Church in Sharon Pennsylvania will be completely made over in a process that officials are calling a "stage breaking," event.

The facility was just purchased and will be turned into a performing arts center.

Phase one of construction was complete when the new stage was built.

"We've entered into our stage two which is electrical which is well under it's way," said Thomas Perman, president at the Area Community Theatre of Sharpsville. "The final stage will be they put together the rest of the remaining items that need to come together so that we can perform here," he said.

The community shared their excitement saying this project is a great start to a more vibrant downtown area and redevelopment of the city.

"The culmination of all the things that are going on right now, kind of almost like the perfect storm of opportunities," said Jim Landino of JCL Development. "These guys have jumped all over it and we're super, super excited to have them here," he said.

Officials tell 21 News they already have big plans for the facility when it's up and running.

"We're gonna put together a full fledged musical on this stage," said Susan Piccirilli, vice president at Area Community Theatre of Sharpsville.

Before hosting their big events, they have to continue fundraising to secure a remaining 200 thousand dollars needed to complete the project, with 300 thousand already invested.

The downstairs area of the building was completed first so that people could come in and use it and help generate some of the funds they need.

"The creation of this upstairs is not only for the art community theatre to perform," Perman said. "It's to bring in regional and national acts in the future so that the community can enjoy the same type of entertainment that they can have in Pittsburgh or Cleveland and that's our end goal in this," he said.

The facility is currently 50 percent complete and officials say the other half should be finished by the end of the year.

Perman and Piccirilli tell 21 News they hope to have performers on stage by spring 2022.
