CANFIELD, Ohio - Fall officially begins Wednesday and lots of folks have already bought their haul of mum plants.

We consulted Tim Parks, the owner of Parks Garden Center in Canfield, for some advice on how to best maintain mums and to keep them flourishing in full bloom.

Parks said, like any plant, the weather determines how often they need to be watered. But, typically speaking they will need to be watered on a daily basis.

One tip he suggested is to pick-up the mum. If the mum feels light, then it needs watered. If the mum feels heavy, then it does not need water.

As for getting the mum to come back next year.

"That's always the question everybody always asks on mums," said Parks. "The reason they don't come back on mums they need to be planted, like the first of September, to have a true shot of coming back next year because they need to root out before winter time."

parks said if you take a mum off the patio, or off the front porch, and plant them after the fall decorating season they have at best 50/50 chance of returning.
