A Fortune 100 tech company has been chosen to provide quality control systems at the Ultium Cells plant under construction in Lordstown that will manufacture batteries for Cadillacs, Hummers, and other electric vehicles.

Honeywell announced on Wednesday that its Quality Control System has been selected to ensure the quality and integrity of the lithium-ion batteries produced at its new manufacturing plant.

Due to be completed in 2022, the 2.8 million-square-foot factory will be one of the largest electric vehicle battery plants in the United States.

Honeywell will provide high-precision scanners and basis weight sensors to serve as the quality control platform for four of the Lordstown plant's production lines.  The system will help Ultium maintain quality requirements by measuring electrode coat weight, a key parameter in the production of battery cells.

The system will allow Ultium to trace quality control throughout the plant.

In addition, Honeywell says its modular platform will help Ultium provide new measurement and control technology as battery cell production requirements evolve.

"We chose Honeywell because of the company's deep understanding of the lithium-ion battery sector and the fact its measurement and control technology is already being used in critical areas of manufacturing," said Germanus Woo - Planning Director, Ultium Cells

The batteries produced in Lordstown will be high performance, capable of a range of 400 miles with fast charging and long operational life, and they will require strict quality controls in the production process.

According to its website, Honeywell is a Fortune 100 technology company serving aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings and industry; and performance materials globally.
