STRUTHERS, Ohio - Struthers City Council has given the green light to increasing the hiring age for police officers.

The move is aimed to recruit more people to become officers.  The current age qualification range is 21 to 35 years of age.

Council on Wednesday approved raising that to 45 years old.  The mayor says this could take effect as early as Thursday.

Police Chief Tim Roddy tells 21 News that the younger age requirement causes them to miss out on several good, potential hires.

The department is going to be having a test soon and city officials say they want to have a large group of applicants from which to choose.
